2023 CLA Annual Convention Updates & CFP

September 15, 2022

Dear CLA Colleagues:

Greetings one and all!  I sincerely hope you had a productive summer and a good start to the fall semester, but I also hope that you found time to disconnect from the grueling demands of academic life.  In any event, we have cause to celebrate! It is with utmost pleasure that I invite you to once again make plans to gather for the 81st Annual College Language Association (CLA) Convention on April 5-8, 2023 in Atlanta GA.  We will continue to partner with our Host Institution, Emory University, and our conference hotel, the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North in the “Black Mecca of the South.”

For this highly anticipated event, we are now soliciting additional individual abstract and special session submissions under the theme of “Rage, Resilience and Response” due by November 1st. Submit your proposals to www.clascholars.org.  Please keep in mind the CLA Chair and Presenter Guide when you take a look at the updated call for papers (CFP). As a general rule of thumb, no member can appear on the program more than twice serving a particular role in any session type, and no member can present more than one scholarly paper.  More importantly, you must have a current membership in order to present and participate.

For CLA members who made submissions last year please read the following carefully:

  • If you submitted an individual abstract and received an acceptance letter in 2021 for the postponed 2022 convention and plan to present the same paper without any changes for 2023, you do not have to do anything .
  • If you submitted an individual abstract and received an acceptance letter in 2021 for the postponed 2022 convention and plan to present the same paper with changes for 2023, you need to resubmit the whole proposal with changes.
  • If you submitted an individual abstract and received an acceptance letter in 2021 for the postponed 2022 convention and want to present a wholly different paper for 2023, you need to submit as new.
  • If you submitted an individual abstract and received an acceptance letter in 2021 for the postponed 2022 convention and will not be able to join us in 2023, please contact the English Language Representative, Dr. Janaka Lewis at englishrep@clascholars.org or the World Language Representative, Dr. George Palacios at worldlangrep@clascholars.org directly to withdraw your proposal.
  • If you have any questions regarding Special Sessions proposals submitted in 2021 please direct your inquiries to the Vice President, Dr. José Manuel Batista at vicepresident@clascholars.org.

Finally, be sure to share the CFP and beautiful conference poster with your colleagues and students, and, more importantly, encourage them to join us in Atlanta.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Follow us on TwitterInstagramFacebook, and the CLA website for regular updates, and we look forward to seeing you in the #CLAMemberCircle!

Cordially,

José Manuel Batista, Ph.D.
