COLLEGE LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION RELEASES DOCUMENTARY
Black Scholars in America
Baltimore, MD. – Black Scholars in America, narrated by Bebe Moore Campbell, is a new film that documents the never-told story of how the first international organization of languages and literatures for African American scholars fought Jim Crow in American letters. The story of this organization and its founder, Hugh Gloster, who found the doors to the Modern Language Association closed to him because of the color of his skin, has wide-ranging implications for how the Academy is experienced today by all people who enter it. Because of the pioneering work of the College Language Association, university students throughout the U.S. and the world are now familiar with such authors as Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and many other authors of color who were systematically overlooked and excluded by university curricula throughout American history through the period of Jim Crow and beyond. Members of the College Language Association, who are primarily affiliated with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, are responsible for curricular reform in languages and literatures and for starting the many flourishing author organizations which focus on and promote scholarship about African American authors. Hugh Gloster, who is featured in the documentary, founded the College Language Association in 1937 at his home institution of LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee in 1937. He later went on to become President of his alma mater, Morehouse College. Today, the College Language Association thrives with members from around the globe as it continues to press for innovative and inclusive curricula in America’s colleges and universities.
