OFFICIAL CONTEST GUIDELINES

ELIGIBILITY

a. The Contest is open to any student (undergraduate or graduate) who is presently attending a CLA college or university. A CLA college or university is defined as one where a Member of the College Language Association is employed or is a retiree emeritus.

b. A student may enter the contest only through the sponsorship of an active CLA Member.

SPONSOR

a. The student should contact the CLA Representative whose name and location appear on the Announcement flier.

b. The CLA Representative will provide the student with Official Contest Guidelines and Official Entry Form. These forms may also be accessed at CLAscholars.org (Creative Writing Contest link).

c. The CLA Representative will read the student’s submission to
determine if it qualifies to compete in the Contest.

d. The CLA Representative will sign as Sponsor on the Official Entry Form only when he or she has determined that the submission has literary merit and meets format requirements.

e. In cases where a student submits a work written in French or Spanish which the CLA Representative cannot read, the CLA Representative can sign as Sponsor on Official Entry Form after he or she has determined that the work meets format requirements.

FORMAT

a. Submissions must be typed with letter quality printing on 8.5 x 11 inch white paper. They must be double-spaced. Handwritten work, facsimiles and e-mail submissions will not be accepted.

b. Lyric, narrative and dramatic poems should not exceed 50 lines.

c. Short stories and plays should not exceed 2,500 words (8 - 10 pages).

GUIDELINES

a. Submissions may not have been published nationally.

b. A student may submit in only one Language division.

c. A student may submit in multiple categories (poetry, short story, drama), but he or she may submit only one entry in the category. A maximum of three poems constitutes one entry in the Poetry category.

d. Each entry will be evaluated by a three-member panel of Judges; therefore, students must submit three copies of each entry.

e. An Official Entry Form must accompany the three copies of the submission. Submissions received without the properly signed Official Entry Form will be disqualified.

f. A student’s name should appear only on Official Entry Form, not on
the work itself. Judges will identify a student’s work by the last four numbers of the student’s social security number.

g. Submissions must be postmarked by 5 p.m., December 15, 2007.

h. You must include a $10 processing fee with your submission (a maximum of three poems constitutes a submission in the Poetry category). Submissions that are not accompanied by the processing fee will be disqualified.

i. Submissions that do not adhere to all guidelines will be disqualified.

NOTIFICATION

a. You will be informed via e-mail that your work has been received. Keep a copy of the work as all submissions will be destroyed when the Contest period ends.

b. Submissions will be judged for originality and literary merit. There
can be up to three winners and Honorable Mention in each category. Winners will be notified in March, 2008.

c. Names of winners will be announced at the CLA Conference Banquet in April, 2008, in Charleston, SC. Also, names of winners will appear in the 2008 Summer issue of CLA Journal.

d. Prizewinners’ checks will be mailed in May, 2008. Winners must first verify their correct mailing address.
