7th ANNUAL STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP
2005 GUIDELINES

DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of the CLA Study Abroad Scholarship is to support students at member institutions who want to participate in a study abroad or an exchange program.  The scholarship is open to any student who is presently attending a CLA college or university.  A CLA college or university is one where a member of the College Language Association is presently employed or is a retiree emeritus.

Any student in a CLA college or university may apply for the scholarship through the sponsorship of a CLA member who will forward the applicant's material to the Chair of the Study Abroad Committee:

ELIGIBILITY:

Each candidate must exemplify high academic achievement and a desire to enhance his or her understanding and proficiency of the target language.

The candidate must:

 a. have at least six completed credits of language study
 b. have an overall GPA in the major/minor language of 3.0/4.0
 c. have an overall GPA of at least 2.5/4.0
 d. provide a letter of acceptance into an accredited study abroad program
 e. provide three completed reference forms from the following persons:
      1. A language teacher
      2. One who can speak on the applicant's character, i.e., a community leader, an advisor, a minister, etc.
      3. Teacher/professor other than a language teacher
f. Submit an official transcript
 

  A.     The applicant must submit a 500-word essay explaining the importance of study abroad, the role of a foreign language in his or her career, and the future of foreign languages in the 2lst century.  Each applicant must also explain why he or she merits such an award.

 B.     Each essay must be typed (or prepared on a word processor with letter quality printing), double spaced, on 8 1/2" x 11" white 20 lb. paper.  Seven copies of the completed application (application form, essay, one (1) original transcript and seven (7) copies, reference forms, etc.) must be submitted to the Chair of the Committee.

 C.     All entries must be received by 5 p. m. February 7, 2005.  Please include a  stamped self-addressed postcard so that the committee may inform you of receipt of your application.
 
 

NOTIFICATION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS:

 A.     Recipients will be notified by mail by March 25, 2005.

 B.     Awards will be announced at the Annual College Language Association Convention Banquet, Friday, April 8, 2005, at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. Winners will be published in the summer issue of the CLA Journal.
